Both are version control systems but with different approach. 

In Git, everything is done in a manner opposite to that in svn. 

But git is really really fast than svn, because of its distributed nature. 

You don't need of central server always up and running. You can work offline and push all your changes to remote repository. In fact there is no concept of central server in git whereas it is the most important thing in svn

In a nutshell, SVN: 

1. is easier to explain to a manager. 

2. is easier for "non-coders" to learn. 

3. is easier to use. 

4. is easier to deploy and maintain. 

5. repository size support appears to be unlimited. 

6. has terrific documentation. 

7. file size support appears to be unlimited. 

8. file type support appears to be unlimited (eg. AutoCAD files). 

9. supports traditional version numbers. 

10. can prevent multiple users from checking out the same file. 

Git is the better tool for a development environment where coders are geographically distributed. SVN is the better tool for those who want a proven, stable and simpl(er) tool for "non-coder types" and where there is no need for concurrent development on the same file.
